From Boomers to You-Tubers
Supporting the Education 2.0 Experience Requires a Fresh Approach

Regardless of age or geography, today’s participants in the education experience want, expect, and often demand real-time solutions to the technology issues they face.

Traditional Students

Walking through a student union today confirms that traditional undergraduates are more tech savvy than ever. These learners have grown-up in a world where they can download an MP3 file in less than 10 seconds and Wikipedia is their personal on-demand research tool. When they encounter hiccups in the education experience, they want answers in “Google time.”

Faculty

To be fair, the You Tube Generation isn’t the only group with expectations for warp-speed issue resolution. As today’s instructors experiment with online pedagogy and new technologies, their role can shift from educator to trouble-shooter—resulting in increased time pressures and stress. Simply put, when an issue arises instructors need it solved with speed and accuracy—on the first try.

Adult Learners

Adult learners also have unique reasons for wanting real-time support and resolutions. More mature students generally have a significant personal investment in their education experience—both in terms of input (tuition, time from family and work) and output (employment prospects, advanced certifications, and salary increases). Challenges with technology can mean the difference between staying enrolled in a program or dropping out completely. To add another layer of complexity, each of these disparate groups may experience a wide array of issues, seek support through different channels, and are at peak-productivity during different times.
